Freedom ISN’T Free?

You know … I get so tired of people sending me emails that are supposedly supporting our troops and trumpet how “freedom isn’t free.”

It’s not?  Isn’t free the very definition of freedom?  You know … it’s like … freedom … and everything?

Besides, I don’t see any connection between the wars we’re fighting over seas and freedom.  That’s not protecting our freedom, it’s making new enemies and imposing force upon other nations.  There’s nothing free about that.

Besides, we’re not very free in this nation anyway.  After all, if we’re so “free” why do we jail more people than any other nation in the world … more than double the runner up, good old communist Russia.  Seems like Russians are more free than us, if you go by that number.

Freedom is supposed to mean the ability to live your own life without having someone elses (or some government’s) will forced upon you, and yet our government has laws for every aspect of our lives … from what we can put or not put into our own bodies voluntarily … to where our pets can poop.  It does not mean having an abundance of choice of things to purchase and pay for, which it what many people seem to think it means. I mean, for crying out loud, people don’t even seem to care that their basic rights are infringed upon every day in various ways, so long as they can go to the mall or shop on the internet.

Are we really free here in the USA?

Are we really free at all?

How ridiculous the world is!

So I was reading the news today (I know, I know) and I came across this article on how Rachel Ray is a terrorist sympathizer because she was wearing a black and white paisley scarf in one of the ads that she was doing for Dunkin Donuts! (http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/story?id=4949437&page=1)

Jeez-o-peetz people! It’s a silly scarf for crying out loud! I happen to agree with her publicist that this is a non-story, but this ridiculousness is being perpetuated across the world because no one seems to have any perspective anymore about what’s important.

For crying out loud, even if the scarf is a rip-off of Arabic culture, are all Arabs now terrorists? Because I thought that was fairly confined to an insane few. This seems to be another case of a few bad apples ruining it for the whole bunch.

I personally feel a lot of sympathy for the Middle East. The region seems perpetually torn by war, generally over religion or oil … they have all these foreign occupiers messing up their lives … and there are more victims over there than perpetrators, but we always seem to lose sight of that fact in our fear. In fact, I would be willing to bet that the majority of people over there just want the same things we want … to love and be loved, to have a safe home in which to raise their families, to have access to food, water, electricity and medicine, to build a better life for themselves and their children.

Actually, as long as we stay afraid of them, the easier it is to continue to justify the Iraq war which is ruining our economy and seriously damaging our reputation around the world. I personally think we never should have gone over there in the first place, because Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11 and Saddam never had WMDs. It was all lies and misdirection with an enormous cost in terms of innocent lives (both those of Iraqi civilians and the troops who were sent over to “defend our freedom”) and economically (with a several trillion dollar price tag and rising – we could have fixed education and health care, but we would apparently rather bomb people). I also seriously doubt that the mass murderers responsible for the whole mess :::coughcoughGWcoughcheneyhacksneeze::: will ever be held responsible, and it really makes me wonder about justice in this wild old world.

I guess this post makes me a “terrorist sympathizer” to some people, but I would rather think that I am a general people sympathizer and I would put forth that the situation has a lot to do with making people what they are. I generally believe people are good and will do the right thing when given the chance. Perhaps that makes me naive, too … I prefer to think of it as hopeful. I’d kind of like to think that if we stopped stealing from them, bombing them and generally trying to dictate what they do with their government that they would lose their passion for blowing us up. But that’s just me.

I wish you peace and understanding for your fellow man, no matter his race, color or creed.

Think Gas Prices Hurt Now? Just Wait!

With gas prices now over $4 per gallon, what is the average person to do?

The middle class is being especially squeezed by the gas price crunch, and prices aren’t just going up at the pump. Heating and cooling bills are rising. Food costs are rising. And retailers are generally jumping prices up because why the hell not? They’re facing higher manufacturing and transportation prices for their goods … so it’s the end consumer that will be footing the bill.

All of these problems are symptoms of a generally unsustainable way of life. We are too dependent on fossil fuels for our lifestyles (big surprise). The crunch we’re facing now is not the result of political instability or other temporary supply problem. It is the result of a slow and steady increase of prices over time that has no end in sight and no quick fix.

So our Government, in all its wisdom is subsidizing the production of ethanol. That’s a good thing, right? Not necessarily. They are choosing to subsidize ethanol from corn, which is the least efficient method of production, costing more energy to produce than it creates … and also putting upward pricing pressure on food prices. More efficient methods of producing ethanol include switchgrass and hemp … but don’t expect to see government subsidies for those methods any time soon. It would make too much sense. O.o (Not to mention the marijuana/hemp controversy!)

This is yet another reason that I believe true and meaningful economic recovery for this country is not going to come from the top down. We can’t count on the government to know what the hell it’s doing. After all, look at the current results we are experiencing as a result of laws and government that prizes the corporation over the individual, and the wealthy over the common good. Not so great, is it? In fact, there’s buzz all over the internet regarding the impending doom of the United States as we know it … possible economic collapse, possible martial law, possible governmental overthrow, possible debt enslavement of an entire population while corporations rule unchecked, definite loss of status as the world’s #1 superpower, likely loss of the dollar as world reserve currency, and the list goes on.

Who knows what the future holds? I do know I’m more than a little concerned for the future of my children. I wonder what the world is going to look like when I reach my Grandmother’s age, or if I’ll even make it that long with all the environmental pollution, corruption of health care, and perversion of the food supply. I wonder if companies like Monsanto will succeed in their bid to enslave and make profit from all life while destroying biodiversity and genetically engineering the extinction of species through their “terminator technology” which means seeds from fruits and vegetables are sterile and will no longer grow new food. I wonder if we’re ever going to change our minds about what is trash and what is treasure, cleaning up and utilizing this massive mess of plastic that is choking the ecosystems of this planet. I wonder if the government is ever going to stop putting a halt to the actual solutions that would fix things because it would hurt the profits of their biggest campaign donors.

When I started this blog, I kind of envisioned it as a place for hope and solutions. I just keep seeing these huge and overwhelming problems that are going to take so much to overcome. What we need is for everyone to chip in their two cents, and get their hands dirty working to find and implement real solutions. If we sit and wait for the government or “someone” to save us, I am quite convinced we’re doomed.

So how about it? What do you think? What solutions do you see? How would you pitch in to fix the very large problems we are all facing? One by one by one is the only way change ever happens. When one by one by one, we each pitch in and add our effort, it adds up to one very large change. So let’s get those brains and those hands working! Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Make 2 fewer car trips in your week. Boycott companies with insane, profit hungry, people hurting practices. Pick up litter and stop littering. Buy whole foods and ingredients in order to cook stuff our bodies recognize how to use. Think of a new way to use something that you would otherwise just throw away. Think of a new something that can be used to address one of the massive multiple problems we all face.

Post your ideas here along with the link back to your blog, information or website so we can spread the word. As more and more people realize that our individual contribution makes an enormous difference, more will wake up to what we need to do to heal this world and ensure a future for our children and our children’s children.

Wishing you ideas and motivation to save our world, and hope. Always hope.

Global Food AND Water Crises? Who knew!

Just got done reading this article here …
http://www.alternet.org/environment/85433/
Vandana Shiva: Why We Face Both Food and Water Crises

The average American walking down the street has no idea how much trouble we are in locally, nationally and globally in our environmental crisis. Most Americans have no idea how much trouble we’re in, how little water there actually is, how terribly polluted our water is.

Here’s a good article … http://www.hermes-press.com/water.htm

Water is a commodity. It is traded on the open market just like oil. Corporations are seeking to take control of all water supplies. People all over the planet are suffering with a serious lack of fresh water. And an unscrupulous few are profiting massively from it.

Food is no better. Our store shelves are crammed with “edible food like substances” that taste and smell good, but are killing us because they are chock full of chemical additives that were never meant to be placed in a human body.

Here is a good article … http://www.alternet.org/environment/85395/

The food system is corrupt. It is a profit driven machine … not a keeping people healthy machine. It is about getting the most “value” out of the least expensive “ingredients.” Why are we all fat and sick? Look at what’s in the food!! One of my all time favorites, Monosodium Glutamate … which also is called hydrolyzed protein or modified protein. You know what they use it for in labs? To make rats obese and give them diabetes, because naturally, a rat will *never* develop these conditions. Don’t believe me? Go ahead and google “MSG rats.” I dare you.

Jeez. Haven’t you ever felt like a guine pig? Heck, the entire food and medicine systems in this country are all one massive unnatural experiment! Not to mention sunscreens and home cleaning products and air freshening chemicals and beauty treatments and and and. It’s like one day it was decided, “Let’s see how much non-natural, man-made crap we can slather on and feed and drink and spray on ourselves before we all keel over and die.” Turns out an awful lot … and it causes us to die slow, horrible, ugly death too.

OMG … seriously. I need to stop reading the news. Turning a blind eye and doing my best to live the best I can and spread the awareness is all I can do to keep my sanity. I sometimes feel hopeless when i look at the enormity of the situation. It’s hard not to. Things out there are seriously screwed.

So … help cheer me up. Show me the hope! Share some happier stories to lift the spirits and prove that this isn’t just a huge, inevitable mess.

Wishing you hope. Always hope.

Lina

Cleaning it up

Hoo boy, I am tired! I spent hours today cleaning house. Scrubbed the 2 bathrooms, vacuumed both floors, mopped all the hardwood (and there is a lot of it here – I have the only room with carpet), and generally tidied and wiped down all the disgusting little messes that a house full of 7+ adults (and the occasional children) creates.

Why all the cleaning? Well … first, I’ve been reading a lot of news lately and it makes me feel all dirty. O.o Plus, almost all the roommates are gone for the weekend (except for the engaged kids with their own apartment upstairs). So, I didn’t have anyone busy making more mess while I was cleaning it up. Except my children, that is … and they were actually big helpers today. They are such amazing, smart, loving kids and I can’t believe sometimes that I am so lucky.

Aaanyhoo … so the news has seriously got me down. I wonder if there is hope for the world?

One article was “Does America Have a Prescription Drug Problem?” here at
http://www.alternet.org/healthwellness/84862/?page=1
Short answer … yes! OMG, I am appalled at what is happening with our health care system. Americans are the second least healthy industrialized nation on the planet! I suppose the good news we’re not the absolute worst! O.o Part of our problem is our dependence on pills, and I’m just as guilty as the rest. Except mine aren’t prescriptions … they’re vitamins, minerals and herbs. And still … there are just days I feel I have so little energy. Hmm. Anyhoo, the pills are the problem and the food is the problem and government corruption is the problem and heck, it’s so big I can’t wrap my brain entirely around the problem. (or maybe I can and just don’t want to) So … yeah.

And then there’s good old Bill Moyers lamenting the immanent fall of democracy …
Moyers: ‘Democracy in America Is a Series of Narrow Escapes, and We May Be Running Out of Luck’
http://www.alternet.org/democracy/85521/?page=entire
“For all of America’s shortcomings, we keep telling ourselves, “The system works.” Now all bets are off.” he says. I have to say, he makes a strong case. O.o

And you know what? i have to stop reading. Because when you add that stuff to our environment is screwed, and our economy is screwed, and our education is screwed, and, and, and … Where’s the hope?

Oh … it’s here. The Healing Power of Pets.
http://www.alternet.org/healthwellness/84870/
Studies show that contact with domestic animals can prevent illness. How nice. The world is going to shit, bit I’m not going to worry. I have a cat. O.o

I believe there is hope, though. In my heart of hearts, I see a brighter future for us all. Not sure how we’ll get there, but it’s there. Peace and harmony. For one and all. 🙂

So I’m just going to keep praying and doing my part. If we all just clean up the little messes in our own lives, maybe it will all add up to a nice clean Earth.

Namaste,
Lina

The commercialization of water, food and medicine is just plain wrong

The commercialization of basic human necessities of life is just plain wrong. The fact that if you don’t have money, you don’t eat, have clean water to drink or medicine to treat your illnesses should be seen as a crime against humanity … because it is. Untold millions have died for lack of basic needs that we all share.

I don’t know if you comprehend it … but if you suddenly didn’t have money, it would happen to you too. Without money, it would be entirely likely that you would starve or at least suffer some terrible life shortening illness brought about by malnutrition. No one would bother to make sure you had clean water to drink or wash with. And good luck getting medical attention should you, God forbid, become seriously sick.

Not like I know what to do about it. The whole system is so messed up with the perversion of the Golden Rule. In today’s (and for a good long time before today’s) culture, it’s no longer “Treat others as you would have them treat you” but rather “He who has the gold makes the rules.”

So the farmers get screwed. And the consumers get screwed. While the manufacturers in the middle reap all the profits and convince us that it’s our fault that we’re sick and fat.

Clean water becomes more and more scarce, and what little there is in some parts is monopolized by greedy corporations that make people pay for access to this substance that is absolutely necessary to life… and deny access when the price can’t be paid. Then they put it in bottles to be sold to the wealthy, and the bottles end up more useless junk used one time and thrown away. You just know somebody’s laughing all the way to the bank.

And don’t even get me started on medicine. Just seriously don’t. Because I can go on and on for hours about how access to medicine is restricted to only those who can afford the overbloated and exorbitant fees here in America … and how it’s been turned into a people-killing, prescription dependent profit scheme … but you probably have your own medicinal horror stories, so I’m just going to leave it.

And I don’t have the answers. Ugh. I’m all riled up and pissed off about all of it, and it seems like there’s just not a damned answer to be had. We’ve capitilized ourselves into some freaky mess. Do you see an answer?

Seriously though … I need to quit reading the news and focus on my business. Good Lord knows that reading the news only pisses me off and makes me feel hopeless about this planet. Call me crazy, but as hopeless as it seems, I still hold on to hope. I still hope that someday, we humans can learn to be humane to each other…. can even remember the real Golden Rule.

In the meantime … I’m just going to remember what I’ve learned and perhaps do a little more volunteering. Work in a food kitchen or something… Remember to give money or food to the homeless folks I see. I may not have much … but we all deserve to have nourishing food, clean water and medicine when we are ill, no matter who we are or how much money we may have.

Wrapping up with a quote …
“I am only one, but still I am one.
I can not do everything, but because I cannot do everything
I will not refuse to do the something that I CAN do.”

Not sure who wrote that, but it is so true I hung it on my wall. If you know who it was … drop me a comment so I can give credit where credit is due.

Wishing you healthy food, clean water, adequate medicine, a warm bed, and someone you love to share all of it.

Namaste,
Lina
